Collaborative Open Meetings: A Virtual News & Information Summit Event

In partnership with the NC Local News Workshop, the North Carolina Open Government Coalition presents Open Meetings Policy: A framework for citizen-powered governance to create more inclusive public meetings on March 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

This virtual-only event is a free component of the N.C. News & Information Summit on March 17It aims to empower citizens, journalists and government officials to collaborate and create more vibrant public participation in public meetings.

Patrick Conant, Director of Sunshine Request, and co-facilitators from Code for Asheville will present a policy template for improving open meetings and community outreach. The draft policy imagines a citizen-led governance structure where residents decide how public meetings operate, enhancing the minimum requirements of the North Carolina Open Meetings Law.

The facilitators hope to create productive conversations between government officials, journalists and citizens to develop a framework for healthy and democratic information-sharing that capitalizes on available technologies.

Participants in the virtual session will leave with a better appreciation for different perspectives and challenges that surround public participation in local government. Participants will also have an opportunity to discuss innovative, community-driven proposals and solutions.

This event will be held via Zoom. Sign up for a Zoom account and register for the event. Registered guests will receive Zoom login information approximately one week before the virtual session. For more information, please e-mail the NC Open Government Coalition at ncopengov@elon.edu.
